Formed at the Art Academy of Düsseldorf, in 1916 he moved to Paris where he lived with the artists of the time, making great friends with two of the painters that will significantly influence his later work, Amadeo Modigliani and Henri Matisse. With Modigliani maintains a close friendship until his death in 1920, he inherits the movement of the figures and the simplicity of their forms.

But it is with Matisse that he learns what he will develop in the future as the “Theory of color”. In 1926, the French art magazine “The Fine Arts”, published a report on his work having a great impact at the time. At this time he was closely linked to the painters of the “School of Paris”, among whom were many Spanish artists. Hence, his great interest in Spain and Spanish. At the outbreak of World War I, he interrupted his studies in Paris and moved to Germany. At the end of the war, he travels sporadically abroad installing large seasons in Spain and Morocco. This time is very rich and productive. After several years he moved to Cologne. After his death in 1978, the German state acquires all the work to his heirs, remaining as funds of the local museum.
