The Sofa features a serpentine outline, camelback crest rail with central floral carving, deeply button-tufted back and sides, scrolling arms, and a carved apron, raised on cabriole legs.
-
The Armchairs (Pair) each with a shield-shaped tufted back, carved floral crest, upholstered arms, serpentine seat rail, and cabriole legs.
-
The Side Chairs (Six) with tufted shield-shaped backs, floral carved crests, cabriole legs, and serpentine aprons, upholstered en suite.
Context & Significance
The suite reflects the Rococo Revival style that swept Europe in the mid-19th century, inspired by 18th-century French Rococo. In Spain, such designs signaled refinement and modernity, serving as the centerpiece of the salón, the formal reception room where social standing was displayed.
Parlor suites of this scale were often commissioned by affluent households, combining French-inspired ornamentation with robust Spanish craftsmanship. The survival of a complete suite — sofa, armchairs, and six side chairs — is particularly rare and provides valuable insight into the decorative arts of 19th-century Spain.
